‘The Archaeology of Weeley Barracks’ by Nick Cox (Oxford Archaeology)

Weeley Barracks was one of a number of temporary barracks built to accommodate troops defending the south and east coasts. The site at Weeley has remained in agricultural use unlike many contemporary sites and is the first such barracks that has been archaeologically investigated. Whilst the early 19th century remains were the most significant of those uncovered the investigation found evidence of activity dating from the Roman period to as far back as the Late Bronze Age. The talk will discuss the results of the investigation and how they tie into the documentary records from the period.

After Nick Cox had gained his undergraduate degree in Archaeology from the University of Bradford, he began working in commercial archaeology in 2008.He joined Oxford Archaeology in 2011 and has been here ever since. Currently he works as a Project Officer, both running fieldwork projects and writing them up.
